This fabric was a response to the fashions coming from Burberry around 2015. Particularly inspiring was their augmentation of the famous Burberry check; a zoom in on the pattern until intersecting lines became areas of solid colour, a design fortified by a bold and complementary colour palette.
The final design for »staircase« was the last stop along a lengthy journey of choices for colour block arrangement, abiding by the applied limitation of clasped-weft weaving at no more than 3 colours per row.
An especially enjoyable element of this design is the imagined movement and tessellation of the shapes, the negative space around them, and how they might shift in different directions across the surface of deep blue.
